How Much Does PAT Testing Cost?
Straight answer, a full price table, and the extras that make "from 50p an item" quotes cost more than they look.

Why per-item quotes can be misleading
You will see PAT testing advertised from as little as 50p to £1 an item. For a large site that can genuinely be cheaper, and if you have a thousand items you should shop on per-item rate. For a typical small business or rental property it usually is not, for three reasons.
- Minimum charges. Almost every per-item price has a minimum call-out behind it. A 15-item office at 60p an item is £9 of testing, so the minimum charge is what you actually pay.
- Extras on top. Travel, certificates, out-of-hours access and replacement plugs and fuses are often billed separately. Ours are included, apart from parts.
- VAT. A price quoted excluding VAT is 20% more than it looks. We are not VAT registered, so £50 is £50.
A worked comparison
Take a 20-item office. A quote of "75p an item plus £45 minimum call-out, plus VAT" comes to £54 including VAT once the minimum applies. Ours is £50, with the certificate and any minor repairs included. The advertised per-item rate looked six times cheaper; the bill was not.
Now take a 400-item factory. At our rates that is £50 + (150 x 80p) + (200 x 70p) = £310. A specialist quoting 45p an item flat would be £180. For volume, shop on rate. We will tell you honestly if you are better off elsewhere.
What changes the price
- Item count is the main driver. Count plugs, not rooms: every kettle, lamp, charger and extension lead is an item.
- Out-of-hours work, if you cannot close during the day, is at a rate agreed before the visit.
- Distance, only if you are well outside our normal area, agreed when you book.
- Parts, if plugs or fuses need replacing.
How to estimate your item count
Walk the premises and count anything with a plug, including items that live permanently under a desk or behind a counter. Extension leads and multi-way adaptors each count as an item, and they are among the most likely things to fail. Most people underestimate by about a third, so if you are between two bands, tell us the higher one and we will confirm the price on site before starting.
How much does PAT testing cost?
Our pricing is fixed and all-inclusive: £50 for up to 50 items. For larger jobs it's £50 for the first 50 items, then 80p per item up to 200, and 70p per item beyond that.
